You might recognize Michael Rix from the Ken Burns’ acclaimed PBS documentary Country Music, where he was featured in the montage of musicians playing Wagon Wheel, but you should recognize him for his unique banjo playing style.
Michael plays a mix of original and cover songs during his stage set and his afternoon performance at the Nashville venue, The Local, did not disappoint the audience. Cover songs reflect Michael’s aesthetics, not simply replaying the original. If one wasn’t paying attention during Michael’s ramped-up cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Give Me One Reason”, you might think he was playing guitar during the solo, but it was a whirlwind banjo ripping through his notes.
As for originals, Michael’s songs are anthems for hope. He inspired the crowd with “Don’t Let It Get the Best of You” and “Sounds Like Summertime”, both from his I Can See The Sun album, which generated over 24 million streams. Recently released collaboration with Dee Dee O’Malley, “Sunrise”, really makes you believe that every sunrise is a new day with a whole new chance.
Like so many hard working musicians who take any opportunity to share their hopes and live their dreams, you can, and should find Michael wherever he is playing. Be it a small Nashville venue like The Local, an in-the-round session at the Bluebird Cafe, or a pop-up porch concert in Franklin TN, time spent with Michael will be time well rewarded.
