Freaking Out

New single · Summer album due July · Tour hits Nashville’s The Basement East October 23

If you’ve caught Michigander at the Basement East or followed Jason Singer’s decade-long climb from a DIY solo project in Kalamazoo to a Nashville-based indie rock force with over 100 million streams, you already know he doesn’t make small songs. What you might not be ready for is how effortlessly he’s made his most immediate one yet.

Michigander’s songs usually tells an uneasy story, an off balance, a wanting. A man uncertain and stuck “between a pillow and a dream” as in the 2019 “Misery” — Michigander’s most definable track landing over 20 million Spotify streams. Or living the storm all in his head. But the 2023 song “East Chicago, IN” tells a more sensitive story and shows he isn’t always in a hyper state — freaking out.

His latest single, “Freaking Out” is the opening statement of a much anticipated album Over Before You Know It (published release date July 31). It relieves the tension of the verse’s pounding guitar with a refrain that swirls around and around in your head just like that record spinning on a turntable, but never quite resolves that feeling of living a life out of control — perfectly reflecting life’s highs and lows. Spotify teases at other tracks on this upcoming release, “Let Go Of You” and “Good Things,” and leaves us imagining which Jason those will be.

Michigander hits the road this fall with a Nashville stop at The Basement East on October 23rd. Make the trip. Find everything Michigander at michiganderband.com.
