The New Jersey band played at the 9:30 Club last Thursday and showed why they are a top act in the psychedelic jam scene. Fresh from releasing their third album, Distroid, the five members gave a show that mixed skill with a lively, shared energy.
The opening set set a high standard right away with an expansive, 23-minute rendition of “Tillie” — a masterful display of patient improvisation, anchored by Sam Lucid’s steady, deep-pocket bass and complemented by Jeremy Kaplan’s swirling synth textures. The set also featured originals like “Dangers of Rah Rah,” “Grease,” “Lucia’s Secret,” and “Bubble,” showcasing the richness of their catalog alongside fresh material.
Set two brought renewed energy, featuring a special guest appearance by Natalie Brooke on a cover of Son Seals’ “Funky Bitch,” Go-set. The set also included “Unfocused,” “The Bag,” “Little Things,” “Postcard,” and “Way To Be.” The band closed the night with “Thomas Duncan, Pt. 3” as the encore — a serene and reflective finale to an energetic evening.
